Cappelle Medicee – Sagrestia Nuova

Most of the sculptures of the ‘New Sacristy’ were done by Michelangelo. Here we can find the tombs of some Medici Family members. There’s an endless balance in the way the sacristy was designed and almost all sculptures have a profound meaning. As you may notice, the sculptures don’t have pupils, which may be a reference to them not having a soul of their own. They do however have eyes, which enables this sculpture to glance over at the door that originally was the entrance to the space, looking at who’s entering to disturb the peace in the chapel…

(if you go to the chapel you can follow the gaze of the statue and you’ll automatically find yourself in the right place, where the former entrance was located)
