San Miniato al Monte

Art / History

High above the historical centre of Florence you can find the basilica of San Miniato al Monte. A Romanesque (not Roman!) church, financed by the Arte di Calimala (gild of cloth merchants). Romanesque churches have smaller and less windows than church of later dates. Coming in from the sunny outside, your eyes need a few moments to get used to the dark inside. But once they do, what you see will leave you in awe. The ceiling consisting of painted wooden beams, the Romanesque (Byzantine inspired) mosaic, the silence and the frescoes are of another world. The church is part of a monastery that’s still in use. The monks living here have daily services.
